Pool view at the Occidental Grande Cozumel resort, Mexico
The immediate image that comes to mind when envisaging a holiday in Mexico is lounging under an enormous sombrero beside a cactus while washing down fiery food with litres of tequila. Though there is an element of truth in the image, Mexico is far more diverse and developed than the "wild west" that it is sometimes portrayed as.
Beaches and natural locations
Mexico is officially the most frequented place in the Latin America area and is a beloved destination for holiday makers not only from the USA but from all over the world too. One of the enormous draw cards is the beautiful beaches and resorts that are scattered along the Caribbean coast. The beautiful sun drenched stretches of white sand feature palm trees and turquoise seas. Surfing, snorkelling, diving, bathing, kayaking and a whole host of other water sports are available in most areas. Renowned spots include Cancun, Huatulco and Acapulco with its enormous cliffs that locals and brave tourists like to dive off of. Numerous natural wonders are scattered throughout Mexico and are sure to inspire and impress. You can visit the blowhole at La Bufadora, observe the amazing creatures in the secluded Sea of Cortez or climb the volcanic Pinacate Peaks. The nature in Mexico is incredibly varied but beautiful all the same. Eco-tourism tours are a popular attraction.
Ancient History
Mexico is the home of many ancient civilisations, the most notable being the Aztecs, the Olmecs and the Mayans. Remnants of these civilisations are preserved, protected and truly awe inspiring. A holiday in Mexico should include a visit to at least one of the important sites namely Chichen-Itza, Teotihuacan, Palenque, Tulum, Monte Alban and Xochicalco. The cities and temples are not only fascinating and beautiful but are sometimes also situated in stunning locations. The Mayan Riviera nearby Chichen-Itza and Cancun offers the opportunity to swim in freshwater rivers and relive the past while exploring the dense forests. The National Museum of anthropology and history in Mexico City is a conglomeration of artefacts that capture the deep and mysterious history of Mexico and is definitely not to be missed.
Spanish History
The Spanish Colonial history is an integral part of who the Mexican people are today. Obviously palaces, churches and other impressive architectural sites decorate much of the country and date back to the country's earliest modern history. Your Mexican holiday is sure to include a visit to some stunning Spanish statues, monuments and sites, even if unintentionally.
Tequila
Finally the tequila in Mexico is obviously something that should be savoured and probably treated with a little respect unless you wish for your Mexican holiday to forever remain a blur. The tequila tours are highly recommended as they teach about the origins and makings of the product and also offer you the opportunity to sample a variety of types and even get to eat the prized worm if you are very lucky.
